CONCORD, N.H. — The Republican delegations of Hillsborough and Rockingham counties have issued letters of appreciation to their respective county sheriffs for maintaining partnerships with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the 287(g) program.
In letters dated May 30, 2025, the Hillsborough County Republican Delegation, led by State Representative Jordan Ulery (Hillsborough 13), and the Rockingham County Republican Delegation, chaired by State Representative Ken Weyler (Rockingham 14), praised Sheriffs Brian J. Newcomb and Charles Massahos for their continued cooperation with ICE. The letters commend the sheriffs for prioritizing public safety and upholding the rule of law, emphasizing that the 287(g) program plays a crucial role in keeping New Hampshire communities safe.
“Your commitment to public safety and the rule of law is deeply valued by the people of Hillsborough County,” the Hillsborough letter reads. It continues, “By maintaining this partnership with ICE, your office has helped to ensure that our communities remain safe and secure.”
The Rockingham delegation echoed this sentiment, noting that in today’s political climate, law enforcement officials face growing pressure. They expressed gratitude for Sheriff Massahos’ “unwavering dedication to upholding the law and protecting the citizens of this county.”
The 287(g) program allows for collaboration between ICE and local law enforcement agencies to identify and remove individuals who are in the country illegally and pose a threat to public safety. While the program has faced criticism from some groups who view it as overly aggressive, supporters argue it is a vital tool for enforcing immigration law and enhancing community safety.
The letters were signed by dozens of Republican legislators across both counties, including House Majority Leader Jason Osborne (Rockingham 2) and House Majority Floor Leader Keith Ammon (Hillsborough 42). Both delegations reaffirmed their strong support for the sheriffs’ work and for continuing cooperation with federal authorities.
The Hillsborough County Republican Delegation includes 32 state representatives, while the Rockingham County Republican Delegation includes 30 representatives, reflecting a broad show of support for the sheriffs’ leadership and law enforcement efforts.
This development comes as New Hampshire continues to debate the role of local law enforcement in federal immigration enforcement and the state’s broader approach to public safety.
